Pre-instructional Assessment


The pre-instructional assessment is an performance assessment administered by a tester to a member of the target audience of the intended instruction, the testee, to determine exiting knowledge and skills prior to taking the instruction. Results of the pre-instructional assessment will be evaluated using a checklist. Depending on demonstrated entry level knowledge and skills, instructional materials may be modified. The pre-instructional assessment will evaluate the instructor's ability to perform the following tasks prior to taking instruction 1) set up and test a microphone to record audio 2) record a narrated PowerPoint presentation reading a sample printed script aloud into a microphone 3) save a recorded PowerPoint presentation to a video file format ready for online delivery. The tester will provide the testee with a printed set of directions for taking the pre-instructional assessment. The testee will be provided with the necessary equipment and materials to complete the pre-instructional assessment. Tester will record date and name of testee, observe and record the testee's performance, and record any additional comments/observations on a printed pre-assessment evaluation sheet in pencil. The evaluation sheet is a checklist that lists all the necessary procedural steps required to complete the
pre-instructional assessment.

Instructions for administering Pre-instuctional Assessment (for the tester)


For the pre-instructional assessment, the tester administering the assessment will perform the following:
  1. prepare the learning setting prior to administering the pre-instructional assessment
  2. greet the testee and seat them at a desk with a personal computer
  3. explain the purpose of the pre-instructional assessment
  4. explain how the pre-instructional assessment will be administered
  5. administer the pre-instructional assessment

1. In order to prepare the learning setting prior to administering the pre-instructional assessment, the tester will do the following:

A. Make sure necessary equipment and materials for pre-instructional assessment are present:
  • desk
  • chair
  • personal computer - monitor, keyboard, mouse
  • USB microphone
  • printed pre-assessment evaluation test sheet with directions for administering the pre-instructional assessment (for the tester)
  • printed directions for taking the pre-instructional assessment (for the testee)
  • pre-instructional assessment sample PowerPoint file
  • printed pre-instructional assessment sample narrative script
  • pencil
  • device to time the pre-instructional assessment





B. Set up the personal computer:
  • start computer and boot into Win XP operating system
  • check MS Office PPT is installed on computer
  • check Camtasia Studio 7 trail version is installed on computer
  • check that microphone has been disconnected from computer
  • check that any open windows on the desktop are closed
  • check pre-instructional assessment sample PPT file is located on computer desktop

C. Place USB microphone on desk in direct line of site of the testee (near monitor or keyboard)

D. Place printed pre-instructional assessment sample narrative script to be read aloud and recorded over PowerPoint presentation on desk in direct line of site of the testee (near monitor or keyboard)

E. Place printed directions for taking the pre-instructional assessment (for the testee) on desk in direct line of site of the testee (near monitor or keyboard)

2. Once the testee is present, greet them and seat the testee in a chair at a desk facing the personal computer

3. Explain the purpose of the pre-instructional assessment to the testee:
  • The purpose of the pre-instructional assessment is to evaluate the testee's entry level knowledge and skills prior to taking instruction by assessing the testee's ability to 1) set up and test a microphone to record audio 2) record a narrated PowerPoint presentation reading a sample printed script aloud into a microphone 3) save a recorded PowerPoint presentation to a video file format ready for online delivery.

4. Explain how the pre-instructional assessment will be administered to the testee:
  • the tester will present the testee with printed directions for taking the pre-instructional assessment prior to taking the assessment
  • the tester will allow the testee to briefly review the directions before beginning the assessment
  • the testee will have 60 min to complete the assessment
  • the assessment is comprised of three main tasks 1) set up and test a microphone to record audio 2) record a narrated PowerPoint presentation reading a sample printed script aloud into a microphone 3) save a recorded PowerPoint presentation to a video file format ready for online delivery
  • in the instance the testee becomes stuck and cannot proceed, the testee may indicate such to the tester and the assessment will be finished
  • at the end of 60 min, the completion of the task or the testee is no longer able to continue the procees, whichever comes first, the assessment will be finished

5. Administer the pre-instructional assessment:
  • the tester will present the testee with printed directions for taking the assessment prior to taking the assessment
  • the tester will allow the testee to briefly review the directions before beginning the assessment
  • the tester will observe the testee and evaluate their performance for each step in the three main tasks
  • the tester will mark an X in the yes column next to each sub step in each of the three main tasks on pre-assessment evaluation sheet that is performed correctly
  • the tester will mark an X in the no column next to each sub step in each of the three main tasks on pre-assessment evaluation sheet that is performed incorrectly (missed or skipped steps are performed incorrectly)
  • the tester will mark any comments or observations in the comments column of the pre-assessment evaluation sheet
  • the tester will stop the assessment at any point in the assessment upon indication from the testee that the testee is not able to proceed
  • at the end of 60 min, the completion of the task or at a point the testee is no longer able to continue the assessment, whichever comes first, the assessment will be finished
  • at the completion of the assessment, inform the testee the assessment is finished

Directions for Taking Pre-instructional Assessment (for the testee)


Using the provided equipment (personal computer, computer monitor, computer keyboard, computer mouse, USB microphone, sample PowerPoint presentation, and printed sample narrative script) record a narrated PowerPoint presentation and save the file to a video file format ready for online delivery. The
pre-instructional assessment must be completed in 60 minutes. The pre-instructional assessment will be complete when you have correctly performed each of the three main tasks necessary to record and save a narrated PowerPoint presentation in the specified order.
  1. Set up and test a microphone to record audio
  2. Record a narrated PowerPoint presentation
  3. Save the file to a video file format ready for online delivery

The purpose of the pre-instructional assessment is to determine prior knowledge and skills for creating a narrated PowerPoint presentation prior to taking instruction. In the event you are not able to proceed, you may tell the tester you are not able to proceed and the
pre-instructional assessment will stop.

At the completion of the pre-instructional assessment, please close all open applications and windows on the desktop and unplug the USB microphone and place it on the desk.

2.1. Launch sample PowerPoint file and open Camtasia Studio Recording window
